Topaz clean - some of my crazy stupid thoughts about it
1. Why do we need to use topaz clean?
2. Recover details  right before and after topaz clean
3. How to topaz hayate tones - 1300 px

if publishers print manga (which is original black and white(?) in yellow paper), it is fine for eyes to read more.

i always wonder the way publishers make digital manga. maybe something wrong if they only scan the page author draw (with tones) and resize, it is something bad... black and white color and wrong final size (all is 1600 px). it looks inchy for me.

the page author draw >> scan >> print >> physical
the page author draw >> scan >> resize 1600 px >> digital

clean manga is to make page clearly to read. i think it is similar to make manga become digital. (though we used sharp...)

after..... then leveling and resizing page to its final size. the clean page are black and white.
if cleaned page is black and white, it is fine to see 1 page but i think it is harmful to eyes if we see many pages like that.

it is boring if the page only is black and white. let screw it by using topaz clean.

why do we need to use topaz clean? to have grey color (and to make gradient smoother(?))

let check with MTO's to love-ru darkness :

_______

Recover details  right before and after topaz clean
there are rather many cleaners already knew about this or even have better ways to recover and newbie can learn it himself by time too so i do it for someone don't know, it is not that i will lose something.

i'll take a page to do sample. it is manga Hanebado. (its final size is 1300 px high though i thought its size is 1400 px but then i realized that i was wrong )

after doing previous processs like unsharp, denoise, blur,... then the next step is level and resize to 3000 px high
duplicate Layer 1 (alt + j) and use topaz denoise (adjust strength to 1 or what you think it is enough. topaz denoise at size 3000 px high to have tone arranged better) with Layer 1 copy. then resize to final size (1300 px) (for newbie remember that resolution is 72 px/inch)

_______________________________ with Layer 1 copy
after topaz clean, image> canvas size... and fill white in blank erea, then topaz clean and canvas again to crop what was expanded by canvas
__

image >> canvans size and type the number 200 or 100 ... ( >= 16 px) (relative is ticked)

then click here

then fill blank area with white (the area which was expaned)

then topaz clean (remember image > mode RBG color before using topaz)
the setting is
strength is 2 or 4. threshold is 0.45 - 0.99 or higher
sharpess is 1

texture is 0.6-0.9. always < 1 (texture 1 for redrawer)
usually accent, sharpness and boost need to be 1 and the other settings is variant and not constant.
__
btw is is fun to know that others canvas, make new layer and fill white and move layer clean above then merger layer. it is better than what i've said.
__
after topaz clean, the page will have some dust
level a bit again

then image > canvas size... what was expanded
__________
Why you have to canvas before using topaz clean?
topaz clean doesn't have effect on area in the corner (16 px?) so using canvas to avoid it.
_______
here is result

it looks good but if you compare to raw you'll see detail was lost (open in new tab to compare)

there are 2 kind of losing detail in this (gradient is not good too but i won't say about gradient)

don't know call "1" is what but "2" is called black line
___
now we will recover 1
there are 2 layer name Layer 1 and Layer 1 copy (which was denoise-ed at 3000 px high)
Layer 1 has more details.
use mask (layer mask) to recover details for Layer 1 copy. google it to know a bit about layer mask then practice.

after recover we have this

now canvas, fill white and topaz clean. compare to the previous this is better.

__
now we'll fix 2 :black lines which were lost
it is fun that we won't recover black line as we did to recover 1. because topaz clean with wide threshold, black lines will lost again.

duplicate Layer 1 and fill white and topaz clean it with short threshold (not canvas because it was already canvas-ed. we canvas-ed when we did Layer 1 copy)

you see it has better black lines. use mask to recover black lines (which was from topaz clean-ed layer which was duplicated from Layer 1) for layer which was recovered 1 and topaz clean-ed

move layer was recovered black lines above layer which was recovered 1 and topaz clean-ed. select layer mode darken then merge.
although it was recovered black lines, why does it still need "darken" above not-recover-black-line layer. it is bacause the different contrast between 2 layer we used to recover. you'll understand when you practice more.

you also can recover white dust

here is the final result after recover 1 and 2 (for newbie, remember after topaz clean, level a bit to remove dust). compare to the result which is not recover. it is not bad, right :D. btw there are still some errors. i didn't fix highlight in panel 2 to save time and the recover is something wrong too, i think i need to recover at process denoise raws to improve result. but with this quality. it is ok. i don't need more. if i want more, it will take more time too.

How to topaz hayate tones
Knight told me the proper size for hayate is 1000 px high. it is good for topaz clean but it is small to read and causes trouble to typeset too.

hayate has big screentones in 1300 px high. topaz clean with normal setting won't have effect at all (but 1000 px is perfect)

so here is the best past. i can topaz clean it. i've found out yesterday (it is June 13).
before topaz clean
topaz clean with normal setting
topaz with sharpness 0.3 and level again 5 250 2 times
topaz clean has effect on hayate tones at size 1300 px with sharpness < 1. but it causes blur.
hayate chap 496 i cleaned the first part with that setting. although it is blur a bit, after seeing it again and again many times, it is actually harmful to my eyes.

now let try this

topaz clean like this 3 times and level 5 250 2 times. here is result. (remember with other manga, topaz clean 1 time with texture < 1 is enough. topaz clean > 1 time (with texture < 1) will look very bad and level 2 250 1 time is enough)
it doesn't blur anymore.

http://puu.sh/innpU/c980d1690d.png
http://puu.sh/inmO4/43230bf1b4.png

i will explain the setting
sharpness - 0.3 : topaz clean is enable to have effect with this but it causes blur
texture - 0.9: reduce effect of topaz clean >> reduce blur, and need < 1 to have grey color
size - 6: reduce effect of topaz clean >> reduce blur

with this, sharp is remaining after topaz clean. so i topaz clean 3 times to make black and white caro become grey. althought it is only a bit, it has effect.

if we zoom to see caro
before topaz clean

after topaz clean 3 times

i created another way to reduce blur a long time ago .it worked but it is not enough.. with this setting of topaz clean, now hayate tones can be topaz clean-ed without blurring.
________
because of some problems, i gave up finding the proper setting to topaz clean hayate tones at 1300 px. when i cleaned shinobi no ban, this manga has large screentones too, i found the way to do it and try the similar to hayate and bad luck for me that it worked for hayate.
after years finding the way to topaz clean hayate, i am too tired and finally can rest now. if you are free, let try and finish it you guys.

thanks for reading this point of view shit.
the right to decide belongs to you.
the fact that i learned cleaning from seeing what others clean manga as reference and built my own standard. there is no real standards for cleaning manga so feel free to do what you want.
everyone has their own ways after all. if you don't want to topaz clean it, let don't. don't be so seriously as me.

10/6
update setting for hayate
yeah, size 6 will cause trouble

the last word...
it will be very easy, if we don't use topaz clean for hayate tones.
the way of cleaning decides if hayate tones will look good or bad after cleaning. i think it is topaz denoise which decides it. not topaz clean.
topaz clean in hayate tones doesn't help make tones better like almost other tones.

so why i have to use topaz clean?
1. i think although normal setting won't work, we still could topaz clean on it. it will be wrong if we don't try or give up too early.
2. if we can use topaz clean for other tones so why can't we use for hayate tones? if it can't, prove that it can't. don't say "it can't because i can't". if you can't prove it then...
3. so how can we use it to make tones better.
my purpose is one of them
-reduce sharpess of tones or
-make tones worse if all is bad orderly then in other words, consider that it mean all is good if you understand otherway

after try hard, my result is not what i want. it is both blur a bit and weird tones.
(sharpness of pattern is reduced >> it is only better a bit compare to not use topaz clean.
sharpness of black line is reduced too >> it is blur, i don't like it. tried to reduce blur)

once again i reached my limit. although it is not good, i still use it. it don't make i am unique but it is what i think and i do.
i topaz cleaned hayate tones like that. welp, i want to stop.

sorry for my bad english.

Change log:
8/12 - strength 1, threshold 0.45
8/14 - boost 1.1
9/1 - topaz clean 2 layers
9/5 - topaz clean 2 layers
9/16 - change level, 13 250 >> 35 1.3 250 ; 7 250 >> 5 250
10/6 - used brightness/contrast. never thought i have to use it. it is bad. use 2 other layers then darken to fix what boost size 6 caused.

(i added contrast to fix blur. it means it will be different a bit what i did in chap 1B of this manga)

btw Haru no Houtai Shoujo. this manga used same tones too in tank from vol 2 or 3 i didn't remember

http://puu.sh/kxZ8a/53983b6454.png (koe no katachi)
the tones in hairs i used topaz clean too
there are some similiar tones to hayate tones (normal setting doesn't have effect :v)
